This statue of Rahula, the wrathful protector of the celestial and tantric realms, is skillfully cast in copper alloy and finished in an antique two-toned patina. The dual finish — darker base tones contrasted with soft golden highlights — accentuates the complex layering of his form and the intricate textures that define this powerful deity.
Rahula is portrayed in his characteristic form with nine ferocious heads stacked above one another, symbolizing his all-seeing vigilance across the nine planes of existence. His central face bears an intense, wide-eyed expression — the embodiment of awakened wrath that eradicates ignorance and harmful influences. His body, adorned with ornaments of serpents and a crown of skulls, conveys the raw force of enlightened protection.
He wields a drawn bow and arrow, symbolizing his unerring aim in striking down obstacles that obstruct spiritual progress. His lower body, formed from a coiling serpent, represents the subjugation of worldly and cosmic disturbances. Surrounding him is a blazing aureole of fire, rendered in vivid red and orange tones, signifying the purifying energy that consumes defilements and transforms them into wisdom.
The craftsmanship reveals exceptional attention to proportion and detail — from the delicate facial features of each head to the finely engraved jewelry and the rhythmic flow of the flames. The antique two-toned finish gives the piece a refined, timeless character, highlighting the precision of the carving without assigning symbolic meaning to the coloration.
Made in Patan, Nepal, this statue stands as a testament to the mastery of Newa metal artisans, whose lineage of sacred craftsmanship continues to embody both technical excellence and devotional intent. For practitioners, Rahula serves as a potent symbol of protection, steadfast awareness, and the unshakable resolve to overcome all inner and outer obstacles on the path of awakening.
