This statue of the Medicine Buddha is crafted in copper alloy and completed in a single-tone oxidized finish, giving the piece a grounded, understated presence. The even, monochrome patina allows the workmanship itself to stand out — from the gentle contours of the body to the fine detailing across the robes and lotus base.
The robe is adorned with carefully engraved leaf motifs, each carved with remarkable precision. Their consistent form and clean lines demonstrate the artisan’s mastery, adding a subtle elegance that complements the serene posture of the Buddha. The facial features are soft and calm, with a balanced expression that reflects the healing aspect associated with this form.
The Medicine Buddha is depicted in the classic gesture: the right hand extended in the gesture of giving, holding a sprig of medicinal myrobalan; the left hand resting in the lap in meditation, holding a bowl. The simplicity of the oxidized finish highlights these details without distraction, allowing the overall harmony of the statue’s proportions and carving to come forward.
Made in Patan, Nepal, this piece embodies refined Newa craftsmanship — a combination of clean carving, balanced form, and a finish that enhances rather than overstates, making it a timeless representation of the Medicine Buddha.
